The Moon. Tarsila do Amaral. 1928. Oil on canvas.

This artwork captured my eyes because of its striking floating waves of the night sky, the clear outlines, and the semicircle on the green field. From afar, I thought it was a human silhouette that resembles a cactus. The crescent moon center itself is an important object in the artist’s painting. The turbulent pattern of the night sky reminds us a lot of Vincent van Gogh, The Starry Night, 1889, Oil on canvas.

The artist’s expression can be connected to the theme of places and spaces. Her memories and imagination about her birthplace, Sau Paolo can be viewed by the cactus form in the green field. When we looked at the artwork, we will resonate with our place, how the loneliness had affected us at that time, and how are trying to be content about it. We always feel that nighttime and its surrounding is a comfortable time to reflect on ourselves.

The Moon’s theme also can be connected to art & identity themes as depicted in Marc Chagall, I And The Village, 1911. Marc Chagall’s artwork focuses on the human relationship with the surroundings while in The Moon 1928, she focuses on her upbringing environment in Sau Paolo, Brazil. Although she had explored and experienced the modern culture in Paris throughout the years of becoming an artist, we can see that her root play an important part in her artwork.
